In Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, the International Women’s Day was commemorated with a brilliant convocation of women from all spheres of life to celebrate their achievements and inspire themselves to greater heights.

Notable amongst these achievements was the appointment of women into strategic government positions both as Transitional Chairmen of Local Government Councils as well as Commissioners into the State Executive Council by the Executive Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha. These appointments were prior to the inception of the Governor’s tenure, usually occupied by the men folk. These ministries include; Works & Transport, Education, Science & Technology and Health, Women Affairs and Social Development.

It was therefore inspiring moments for Imo women as we listened to female motivational speakers who enjoined us to seize the gender parity tone already set by the State Governor and aim for more and higher positions politically and indeed other spheres of influence.

In line with the theme of this year’s celebration, #BeBoldForChange,  we Imo women unanimously pledged to the following resolutions amongst others;

v#BeBoldForChange for Gender Parity

v#BeBoldForChange to End Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting

v#BeBoldForChange to Stop Gender Role Stereotyping

v#BeboldForChange to Encourage Girl-Child Education

v#BeBoldForChange to Support Female Entrepreneurship

v#BeBoldForChange to Defend Women’s Rights

v#BeBoldForChange to be Peace Ambassadors
